Changing a personality

is a futile wish.

It’s useless to ask an employee to change a behavior that’s imbedded in his personality. He might do his best to accommodate, but he’ll quickly grow tired and revert to being himself.

Every employee eventually reaches a plateau indicative of his natural potential at his job. If he’s a good match to the job, his performance will be much higher than average. If he’s a poor match, his plateau will be a fraction of average.

As hard as we might try, we can’t change him significantly or permanently. A personality isn’t a choice or a learned skill, but a core definition. It’s ingrained deep within, where we have only slight and fleeting influence.

Better to find the employee a job that fits his personality, and put a better fit into his job. In the long run everyone will be happier and more productive.
